Widow claims pedicure from Chicago nail salon killed her husband, files lawsuit

A Chicago-area woman has sued a nail salon, claiming a botched pedicure killed her husband.

The Chicago Tribune reports that a lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court says Darryl Carr suffered an infection that intensified to the point where his left leg was amputated. Carr eventually passed away.

The injury occurred at the AZ Happy Nails salon where Carr's feet were soaked in a chemical solution and then in a hot wax solution, Yahoo! Health says. His family claims that the solutions were contaminated and that his left foot soaked for too long.

As a result, Carr suffered "serious burns" to his leg, Fox News reports. The wounds then became infected. The lawsuit faults the salon for inadequate safety and training procedures, and for failing to warn Carr of potential risks.

Carr received the pedicure in November 2013 and died this month, Fox News continues to report. He is survived by his wife and two kids, ages 10 and 13. His wife looks to request a minimum of $50,000 in damages from the salon.

The salon has yet to comment on the incident or lawsuit, the Tribune adds.

From Ombre French to Brisa Gel and 3D nails, the lowdown on what you need for your nails

We didn’t expect to get a stitch from laughing so hard at The Nail Spa. ‘You would like some nail art? Perhaps some minions? When the Universal film Despicable Me first came out, I was drawing minion after minion. Ba, ba, ba, banana!’

Our bubbly nail therapist has driven for an hour to show us The Nail Spa’s new fashion and bridal treatments. But if cartoon movie characters don’t set the right tone for newlyweds, then there are 150 alternative shades to choose from for the Bio Sculpture Gel treatment.

‘Set aside your angelic face and be wicked! Go for black and red nails,’ our therapist jokes, but fear of channelling Cruella de Vil leads us to play it safe with beautiful pastel, lilac nails instead.

Initially, we are startled that the Bio Sculpture session could take up to three hours, but thankfully the complex process, designed to improve strength and natural growth, is carried out efficiently in 90 minutes.

First, our nails are filed, buffed and the cuticles pushed back. ‘Your nails are injured,’ announces our therapist, who applies silk strips to two of ours to strengthen them.

‘Time for surgery,’ she jokes, pinging on a set of rubber gloves and applying a sticky template under each nail, before rolling each into a pointy cone shape.

Next, the white Bio Sculpture Gel is carefully painted with a fine brush over the nail and onto the cone for extra length. Our therapist takes extra care to apply the gel evenly.

However, we are required to set the gel under a UV light and experience a deep burning sensation as the gel bonds to the nail. We are reassured this is normal, but we hastily withdraw our hand several times as it is very unpleasant.

FOREVER BEAUTIFUL: The nail polishes that make your hands look years younger

I love to wear nail polish, but I have some age spots on my hands and feel they look old. Some shades of polish seem to drain my hands of colour and make them look even more wrinkly. Which shades are best to make my hands look younger?

Susan, 68, London.
Hands always look better with tidy, manicured nails. However, some shades are more flattering on mature skin. It’s not about following fashion, but finding what’s right for you.
Nail guru Leighton Denny says: ‘In my experience bright colours work best, as they attract attention away from the hands. And a bright red nail always looks classy.’

Sam Larkin, of Nuyu London salon, says: ‘Nudes and sheer colours have a natural, sophisticated look but they bring all the attention to your hands, highlighting any problem areas. Red is actually the most youthful shade. Gentle peels or microdermabrasion can help even out skin tone and brighten the skin.’
Rosalind Chapman, the founder of anti-ageing brand Transformulas, recommends taking special care of the backs of your hands. ‘Our hands have very few oil glands and the skin on the back is thin and delicate, so it dries out easily. Moisturise regularly during the day, exfoliate weekly and apply sunblock whenever you go outside.’

5 Signs Your Nail Salon Is Sketchy as Hell

Last month, The New York Times published a devastating investigative report about New York City nail salons that left

many manicure lovers feeling sick to their stomachs about a service they once considered a guilt-free treat. The report revealed that manicurists were suffering severe long-term health consequences as a result of being exposed to the chemicals in nail products. On top of that, manicurists were not being paid minimum wage, not getting their due tips, and were often living in cramped quarters while working incredibly long hours.

1.The nail technicians aren't using masks or gloves. Nail polishes can contain what's known as the toxic trio of chemicals: formaldehyde, which causes cancer; dibutyl phthalate (DBP), which can cause reproductive damage; and toluene, which causes neurological damage.

2. There isn't a ventilation system or there aren't any fans blowing in the salon. If you can smell that nail salon smell and it's in your face, something is wrong.

3. Bottles are left open. If the caps are staying off, that means fumes are being disseminated into the air.

4. The salon isn't using nontoxic products. DBP is already banned from use in cosmetics in the European Union and formaldehyde is on its way to being banned in the E.U. as well.

5. There are way more technicians in the salon than there are licenses on display. Licensing requirements vary by state, but be observant.
